I just fell in love

Free up 45 minutes. Go to fox.com and watch Glee. Ignore the last 15 seconds where the teacher says musically stupid things. Pay attention the the Swingle Singers in the score!

I was doing a google search on buffy stuff to see what there was. Who knew? I had no idea there was this huge online community of TV show fans.

you know you're obsessed when...

So my boss says: Book me a flight to Cleveland.

And I (almost) say: Are you sure? You know there's a hellmouth there.

dollhouse

media consumption

Finished Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress. Wonderful fun.

Watched the last four episodes of Dollhouse, including tonight's. I had lost interest mostly, but was invited to watch the previous three eps with a friend who had them saved, so whatever. And now I'm interested again.

Started watching Weeds - 3 episodes so far. OMG, I so adore Mary Louise Parker.

Now that I'm watching The West Wing in one big binge, I'm realizing how much better the earlier seasons were. Still, the later ones are worth watching. I have serious Toby love.

religion

One of the great strengths of the United States, is ... we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. (President Obama)

This is why I love President Obama. Finally, someone willing to say that out loud and not be ashamed of it.

We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.

Not sure I agree with this point. Also undecided about whether I wish I could agree with this point.

I just finished The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Would be interested in thoughts of other people who have read his books. I don't have huge amounts to say because I'm still pondering, but the interesting points made in the book that stick in my head for further ponderment are:
  • The "there must be a creator because things couldn't have randomly evolved" argument: nothing "randomly" evolved. It wasn't random. Or simple. Interesting point.
  • Atheists are not necessarily nihilists. Thank you. True.
  • Why is religion a topic we are not allowed to call out? You can slam a political party all you want, but call out any particular religion for what it is and you're not respecting people's religious freedom.
  • Agnosticism is a cop-out. Had never really thought about that concept. I'm leaning toward agreeing.
  • Religion is a negative, not positive, and not even neutral, force in society. I have felt this way since the moment I took time to think about it. I'm in the minority in my social circles for sure. I usually keep my mouth shut.
  • The need for religion may be a byproduct of another evolutionary process. Interesting. Too complicated for my feeble brain. Still thinking.
Am now off to get more of his books and to finally read Origin of the Species.

Writer's Block: In a Jam

If you were in trouble or ran afoul of the law, which fictional detective or investigator—from tv, movies, or books—would you want to help you?

Guy Noir! Well, OK, that's radio, but too bad. Guy Noir. Or Giles, but he's not a detective.

blond vs blonde?

So is it the feminist thing now to only use the word blond for males and females instead of blonde for females? I'm seeing it everywhere. Is it like the way actresses are now actors? Not judg-y here, just observ-y.

singing tonight!

Marmalade is singing tonight at the Ad Lib Cafe in Lancaster. It's sponsored by this group: http://musicforeveryone.net/, which is a group all about supporting music education. I'm a bit chagrined that all five of us are free - wow, we have no life, LOL - but spontaneous gigging might be just the thing to snap us out of the slight doldrums we've been in as of late. Everyone else in the group will suck it up and sing through their exhaustion, and I of course, will just be waking up and getting functional around 8 PM...

LOL

The waitress where my dad and I just went to lunch told him gleefully that he looks "just like that guy on Harry Potter, you know, Professor Snape, I'm just saying that because I watched the Harry Potter marathon this weekend and there's this other guy who comes in here all the time, and he looks just like the villain from Roger Rabbit, I mean, he has those little glasses and everything, but he's never seen it, but he should rent it because he looks like him, but that guy who plays Snape was in this other movie where he cheated on his wife, so I guess you play a lot of mean parts, huh?"

I seem to be crying a lot

I get teary at some point during every single episode of The West Wing. What is up with that? Am I that affected by rhetoric? The scene where Toby's ex-wife refuses to remarry him because she thinks he's sad - I barely survived the watching. I would marry Toby. He might actually be my favorite character ever.

kaleidoscope canes

I made my first attempts at kaleidoscope canes the other day. Mostly I used lengths of canes, old and new, that were multiplying on my craft table. This one made of mostly blues was my first try.

Basically, a kaleidoscope cane is made by building a fairly intricate triangular cane and then using six matching pieces to make the pattern repeat.

This is my second attempt. This one is a bit of a cheat, because I used four triangular pieces and filled in the spaces in between with more matching canes - same basic effect.

And this third attempt is my favorite, because it's all hippie flowers and rainbows.

I must thank my friends Iris and Linda for the kaleidoscope cane inspiration! I have some projects made with slices from these canes in progress, so stay tuned. I'm not usually into sanding and buffing - I like matte finish - but I'm thinking these may need to be shiny. We'll see.
